Question by : Are police officers allowed to turn on their lights and sirens just to pass a red light?
I have noticed quite a few police officers at a red light turn on their sirens and lights and run the red light and immediately following passing the red light turns it off. Can they do this?

I don’t think there’s a law against this, but those cops probably got it from Superbad.
They are not supposed to unless it is an emergency. They do it anyway though…
Yes, it’s safer when going through a red light for them to employ their lights/sirens, but when getting to the actual call sometimes it’s better not to go in all flashy. They could technically go through a red light without their lights but it’s not as safe for everybody so they’ll probably use lights.
I have noticed that policemen can break almost any traffic laws they wish.
No they shouldn’t unless they are on a call they need to follow the same rules as everyone else. My friend called once to complain about this very thing and she was told that it might have been for one of two reasons (a) a call was issued then canceled ~or~ (b) an incorrect code was given and then corrected. There is also the possibility if it was a busy intersection that the officer may have been on their way to a ‘silent’ roll but had to clear that intersection to continue — this will happen a lot.
You never can tell how fast doughnuts become steel. Running red lights gets them to Dunks faster.
